K&N Engineering Marine Flame Arrestors For 454 and 502 MAG Mercruiser Engines
- Feb 5, 2003
K&N Engineering has designed a line Coast Guard-approved (SAE J1928) flame arrestors and adapters that eliminate the restrictive O.E. "metal wafer"-style flame arrestors, replacing them with a smooth-flowing billet aluminum adapter and K&N's famous FilterCharger®. The value of K&N's FilterCharger®, an oil-impregnated, cotton/gauze, epoxy-coated screen sandwich, has been proven on personal watercraft for years. The oiled cotton gauze filter sheds moisture and the epoxy-coated screen and stainless housings resist rust and corrosion. This design offers virtually no restriction and straightens incoming airflow to reduce turbulence for more power and throttle response.
The two newest additions to K&N's® marine catalog are Part # 59-4541 for the early Mercruiser 454 and 502 MAG engines that have V-belt accessory drives and Part # 59-4542 for those equipped with serpentine belt drives. They both feature anodized billet aluminum intake adapters, FilterCharger® air filters, stainless steel housings and all hardware and instructions needed for installation. Published acceleration tests on a 502 MAG-equipped, 28-foot Eliminator tunnel hull showed a substantial increase in acceleration and higher top speeds.
An added benefit of K&N's® flame arrestors is the added level of engine protection provided by the superior filtration capabilities of the cotton/gauze filter, plus the Filtercharger® element can be cleaned and re-oiled with a K&N recharger kit for renewed engine protection and performance.
